History

From industrial roots to
micro-channeled devices.

Microchannel Devices was founded in 2018 as a spin-off of STV Group, with the support of LIFTT and other Italian private investors focused on accelerating innovative start-ups. After the set-up, additional private equity initiatives joined, strengthening the corporate structure according to a model of widespread and qualified shareholding.

µCD’s technical know-how originated in 2009, through collaborations with French multinationals for the development of compact Printed Circuit Heat Exchangers for cooling nuclear power plants. Thanks to partnerships with some of the most important European research centres, innovative solutions were developed to overcome the limits of traditional PCHE technologies in terms of channel and plate size.

In 2019, the research activity carried out in previous years led to the publication of patents that today constitute the distinctive know-how of Microchannel Devices. In 2020, the new headquarters in Turin’s industrial area was opened: a plant of over 4,000 square metres, with modern machinery and a fully integrated production cycle following Industry 4.0 criteria.

Fully integrated process
We etch plates larger in width and length than any competitor — up to 850 × 3000 mm — and build PCHE cores engineered for extreme conditions: pressures above 900 bar, temperatures from −200 °C to +900 °C, hydrostatic testing up to 2000 bar, including lethal service in Oil & Gas. Diffusion bonding turns the stacked plates into a single monolithic block with the strength of the parent material: no brazing, no gaskets, no external welds. Maximum performance in minimum space — up to 85% smaller and lighter than traditional heat exchangers, with ~98% thermal efficiency.

Custom design and manufacturing

Every device is bespoke. Our engineers work alongside your team to develop the most efficient solution — including geometries an integrated process makes possible: multistream PCHE, hybrid PCHE, cold plates.

And because the full chain is ours, we move at a speed larger groups cannot match: when a client risked millions in penalties after their usual supplier failed, we delivered.

Flexibility and responsiveness

From hydrogen to nuclear, carbon capture, LNG and data-center cooling, our microchannel technology transfers more heat in less space with less material — cutting energy consumption and CO₂ across the industries building tomorrow’s energy systems.

Mission

Micro-channeled devices for energy transition.

Microchannel Devices designs and manufactures micro-channeled devices used in green energy transition and circular economy processes. Its products apply to the entire chain of production, distribution and utilisation of Hydrogen and LNG, to the use and conversion of CO2, and to power generation and chemical and biological reactors. The company masters chemical milling of photo-engraved metal plates, Industry 4.0 assembly and innovative welding processes such as diffusion bonding applied to wide-size plates. Its products and services address the new frontiers of energy production, including H2, nuclear and solar, CO2 trapping, and traditional Oil&Gas markets, with components and devices mainly dedicated to natural gas processing, including CNG and LNG.

Team

The people behind the process.

An integrated production chain works only if the people running it do: at µCD, young engineers from industrial, energy, IT and materials science backgrounds work side by side with managers and specialists who bring decades of experience in heat exchange, oil & gas, automotive and heat treatments. It’s this mix of disciplines — from graphic technologies to welding metallurgy — that turns a complex process into a reliable product. Meet the engineers, technicians and specialists who design, build and test every device we deliver.

our values

The principles behind Microchannel Devices.

Today Microchannel Devices is an Italian manufacturer of PCHE and micro-channeled devices with a fully integrated value chain, from chemical etching to diffusion bonding, and with international certifications for quality, environment, safety and pressure vessels.

The company works with engineers, procurement officers and R&D managers in advanced energy and industrial sectors who need compact, customised and certified heat exchangers for high-pressure and high-temperature applications.

Innovation

µCD invests more than 20% of total capex in R&D for product and process innovation through an internal R&D team and a test lab in collaboration with PoliTO, IIT, MESAP and other partners.

Sustainability

The company is active in building devices for the use of carbon-free fuels, natural refrigerants and for CO2 capture. It has developed processes that reduce water consumption by 70% and optimise the power requirement of the facility, which generates 300 kW through its solar panel array

Legacy

µCD is a young company, but it leverages the know-how accumulated by STV Group in more than 50 years of activity in surface treatment processes for automotive and industrial applications, combined with recent process developments for PCHE.

Participation

Its strength is based on collaboration between young engineers skilled in industrial, energy, IT and materials science and experienced managers and specialists from sectors such as oil & gas, heat exchange, automotive and heat treatments.

Cross-fertilization

Its innovative approach stems from the cross-fertilisation of different and complementary technological sectors, ranging from graphic technologies to surface treatments, materials science and welding processes.

Customer satisfaction

µCD ensures maximum flexibility in identifying the ideal solution for each customer and guarantees product quality through process monitoring according to Industry 4.0 techniques.
